Underfloor heating insulation is an important part of your underfloor heating system. Lots of people think that you don't need underfloor heating insulation as they imagine that the heat will only rise upwards into the room above...

Actually, the heat will go in all directions, including downwards into the subfloor which then, of course, the heat is wasted. By using underfloor heating insulation you can ensure all the heat rises up through your flooring to warm your room and as the floor is well insulated with underfloor insulation boards your room will warm up more quickly, which is more economical. Underfloor insulation boards also help with soundproofing, making your home less noisy underfoot. Underfloor insulation boards go underneath the heating cables to keep the heating from disappearing to the subfloor below. Your underfloor heating insulation keeps the heat rising into the room above.

Popular choices for underfloor insulation boards are cork or polystyrene. Plywood can be used but it isn't such a good insulator, although it is often used in home insulation as it is good value. Cork is a natural form of underfloor insulation boards and is popular because it insulates well, doesn't absorb moisture and is an economical choice. Polystyrene as an underfloor heating insulation is very good for electric heated floors. It is also waterproof and so helps prevent the growth of mould and mildew. Polystyrene underfloor insulation boards also make a good flat surface for installing tiles or wood floors on, which makes it a good choice for underfloor heating insulation. Energy efficient under floor insulation boards are also available, they are pressure resistant which is good for busy areas and will withstand mould and warping.

Underfloor heating insulation is available in different thicknesses ranging from 6mm to 50mm, so there will be an underfloor heating insulation product for every project.
